      Brand new to birdwatching.
I have a very old pair of binoculars which were my late Dads pair which I love but they are very heavy and probably not great , 8 x 30 393ft at 1000yds – any suggestions or advice on buying a new pair?

      Hi Rebekah,

I’d certainly agree that a new pair would be good – optics technology has improved in leaps and bounds over the years.

You should go for at least 8x, ideally 10x, but weight is a consideration. You really should go somewhere where you can try out different models and see how they work for you, it is a very personal choice. A great place if you are not too far from Cley is Cley Spy – visit them at their shop in Glandford just outside Cley.

No idea what your budget is, but you might consider second hand as well. Cley Spy usually have several second hand optics to try.

      Hope that helps.
