See attached photos of a Merganser on Arnold's this morning.  Initially thought it was an elastic band round its neck/bill as it seemed to stretched when it moved but looking at the pictures we now think it is fishing line.  Does anyone have any other ideas?  It was diving so may have been able to feed.

It looks too thick for fishing line I think. More like some plastic it has picked up?  I also wondered about a pipefish, which perhaps could get wound round instead of swallowed, but probably unlikely.

Not sure - could be any kind of discarded rubbish.  Horrible to see, just hope it manages to lose it during one of its dives but no doubt that's being too optimistic.
